It's only for the money. Otherwise, who the fuck would want to play for San Diego?

Baseball's finally back! Time for another year of frustration and disappointment in Seattle. Even though good god that opening day lineup is potentially terrifying.

Dee Gordon, Jean Segura, Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, Kyle Seager, Mitch Haniger, Ryon Healy, Mike Zunino, ICHIRO. With Felix Hernandez on the mound.

Maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up, but that lineup has so much potential to do some friggin' damage.

Unfortunately, they're playing the Indians to start the season, so uhhhhhh

EDIT: Aw shit they've scratched Zunino, it's already beginning

Cubs win today! Ian Happ with a homer off the first pitch of the game, too. I'm happy. Add to that the fact that I picked up Out of the Park Baseball 19 on Steam, and I'm in a good baseball mood.

I feel Seattle oughta make it a tradition to air this little clip every year on Opening Day.

It's such a good way to start off a season. And with a voice I still deeply miss. No announcer to me will ever match who Dave Niehaus was.

Adam Jones with an 11th inning walk off home run to give the Orioles the win in their home opener. Not a bad way to start a season.

So, how do you folks like the season so far?

I have to admit, I didn't think my Cardinals were going to have a really good season (I was figuring they'd be about .500 like they were last year), but they are doing well so far. My brother is quite the Mets fan, so he loved their quick start, but that seems to be cooling off. I work in DC, so all I ever heard about are the frickin' Nats. Ugh.

By the way, what the F!@#$ is up with the AL Central? Only Cleveland is exactly at .500 and they're in 1st? Total suckage all around. :)

Listen here, fucko!

totally being insincere there :D

The AL Central is undoubtedly the worst division in baseball this year but at least my 4th-place Royals have the "Excuse" of being in year 1 of a longterm roster overhaul. Their best hitters to this point have been Mike Moustakas, Lucas Duda, and Jorge Soler (a guy many thought a lost cause after he struggled both in Chicago and in his first season in KC last year; the Royals gave up all-world closer Wade Davis to acquire him). Moose, Duda, and closer Kelvin Herrera will probably be wearing different uniforms by the end of the season, as might Jon Jay, Alcides Escobar, and Abraham Almonte. As for the rest of the division? Chicago has been "rebuilding" for a decade but still somehow relapsed this year while Detroit held on a bit too long to the core from its reign over the AL Central and their rebuild has yet to really start (and frankly can't really succeed until they find someway to rid themselves of Miguel Cabrera's albatross of a contract. The Indians and Twins really have no excuse since they were both expected to be in the playoff hunt at season's end (which we're not even close to but the start for them both has to be concerning, especially given that the other two divisions have 3 teams each with better records) than first place Cleveland. Personally, I'm just glad that the Royals have been playing so much better over the last two weeks. The first month and a half was......difficult and hearkened back to those years of consecutive 100 loss seasons. This might still be a 100 loss season but if they can at least keep it competitive until they have to sell at the trade deadline, it will at least be enjoyable to watch/listen to (as I do more often than not).

Here's hoping that the Royals draft some great players next month and can get some good returns for Moose and Herrera and maybe another moveable piece for Duda (a classic, low average, high strikeout, good HR number power hitter).

I would comment on the rest of baseball but I'd be here all night if I did.
As I do with the NFL and NBA, I play pretty close attention all season. :D

I'm still in a bit of a state. The Mariners are probably better than they've been in 17 years, at least so far, and yet they're still only half a game up on Houston, because the Astros are ALSO insanely good this year. After so many years of frustration with Seattle, finally seeing the team doing well is something I'm far from prepared for... but, I'm still bracing myself for the moment things go to shit.

The Angels are also getting exposed pretty badly in this current series. They're completely a one-man team (especially with Ohtani likely out for the rest of the season). Pujols is long since past his prime, and there really aren't any other exceptional players on the team anymore. It's a wonder they're managing to hold over .500.

The Angels/Mariners series going the last couple of days has been really, REALLY high-octane though. A ton of home runs, Nelson Cruz is looking like himself again, Mitch Haniger might be the best hitter on the team... hell the entire Mariners lineup has been fantastic. I just wish Felix Hernandez could finally put his shit back together and be the ace again, but until he does (if he does) we've got Paxton who's been ridiculously good, Gonzales has been solid, LeBlanc's been good...

finally, ONE-RUN GAMES, WE WILL WIN ALLLLLLLLLLL THE ONE-RUN GAMES

Brewers 1
Cubs 0

Hell of a game. I was on the edge of my seat in the last inning. Unbelievable.

There's talk of baseball employing the DH in the National League. I hope they do. Bases loaded in the 2nd inning and the starting pitcher with a career .112 batting average is up to bat. Not an ideal situation.

Not to mention pitchers cannot run on the basepaths. The Brewers' Jimmy Nelson comes to mind. He still has not pitched this year after being injured in a slide last year.

You'll still have people screaming about "sacrilege" if they do it or even THINK about doing it. Baseball people love their traditions and hate when those traditions are threatened. But it would be good for pitchers' health, I think, if they could focus on just the one thing. Plus the ones that CAN hit worth a damn can still do so if the team really wants.

Last week, 3 time Cy Young winner (who's working on his 4th this season) Max Scherzer scored the winning run in an extra innings game after singling as a pinch hitter for the relief pitcher spot. He ran from first base to do so.

I know it's the exception to the rule but some of those pitchers really do enjoy hitting and are reasonably adept at it. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's why Scherzer went back to the National League in the first place (he had offers all around).

National League pitchers have been hitting regularly for 140+ years and they're no more haggard nor hale than their American League counterparts who only do so a couple of times a year (well, since interleague play became regular; there was a 30 year stretch where the ONLY time that you saw an AL pitcher take an AB during a game was at the NL park in the World Series).

I'm indifferent on the change but if they do go to the DH in the NL then I'll really miss those rare, awesome moments when a pitcher gets it done with the stick.

Oh yeah. Let's add another offensive bat to every NL team that hits around the Mendoza Line and whiffs 200+ times a season. Not like we have enough dumb hitters in the league as it is. :sarcasm:

No thanks. Keep the pitcher. It adds strategy to the game which is something the AL lacks.

I feel bad for your O's, Sword. They may lose this guy and Manny Machado because they threw all their money to Chris Davis. Halfway through a gigantic contract earning $23 million/season and he may go down this season as the worst oWAR player in the history of the game. Ouch.
