Re: General Wrasslin' Discussion

Growing up I always wanted to be a WWF/WWE wrestler. To the extent that at one point I had Killer Kowalski's home phone number and I was going to start training at his facility before I screwed up my back a bit. I mention this to make it clear just how big a deal it is for even me to basically be dreading each and every individual WWE show. Don't get me wrong, I still watch them... but I feel now its more out of muscle memory than any actual sense of enjoyment. The WWE I see now is like a completely different promotion than the company I grew up with.

Moves are banned. Heels are supposedly told to not act "heelish." You can basically play bingo with the phrases Michael Cole says every match. Most storylines have now been regulated to simple "he won a contenders match and now they're having a PPV match" rather than anything remotely resembling an actual rivalry. Every womens storyline which would be potentially excellent storytelling and overall wrestling has been tossed in the bin just so they can brag about making history rather than letting the history happen alongside good writing that will let the performers make a name for themselves outside of merely being bodies inside the match itself, almost as if the women themselves are irrelevant. A three hour RAW has become an exercise in tedium.

Hell, half the time they don't even bother putting any effort into debuts. Remember when Shinsuke Nakamura arrived on SmackDown and he had this elaborate entrance interrupting The Miz only for the Miz to just kinda leave and them to cut to commercial and when they returned Nakamura was already nowhere to be found again? Don't get me wrong, Nakamura has an impressive entrance but ... what part of that makes you want to see the guy after the fact? You've already seen the entrance. Now if he came out and Miz tried to attack him for interrupting and Nakamura ducked the clothesline, hit the ropes, and then hit Kinsasha you'd probably be a bit more interested in seeing them feud.

And that's without even getting into the blatant crap they do when it comes to basically making the NXT guys who were hugely popular in NXT look like chumps on the main roster (The Ascension cut a heel promo saying they're the best tag team ever, like heels do ...and other wrestlers got offended and they got buried over it? Really?), or guys like Zack Ryder who got a huge following only to be treated like a schmuck until the fans just gave up.

And the worst part is I WANT to ignore the bad and enjoy it. I try to. But after you watch a full hour where absolutely nothing is happening you just instinctively start flipping through webpages on your phone and mentally shut down.

Thankfully I found NJPW a few years ago so not all of wrestling seems bleak and hopeless, but still ... I liken it to being friends with an ex after your relationship ends and they just start abusing drugs and alcohol. You don't wanna see them fall apart like that.

I've wanted to get into the older Kings Road AJPW for a while. Just haven't had the time to settle down and do it yet.

I'll keep those links in mind though. Thanks.

Here's a link to pivotshare, which is a streaming service that features a bunch of wrestling promotions from Progress (highly recommended) ICW, to the Highspots network which features PWG and other promotions like AAW. Highspots also has documentaries like the Bruiser Brody doc that came out last year I believe.

For hardcore fans, BJW steaming site. Heard they're slow to upload. Has translate button.

Official CMLL, I believe they show their Friday night shows on the yt for free. If not, using a VPN and NJPWworld.com you can watch.

I still can't get over the fact that people actually watch WWE, voluntarily and expect to be entertained by it. The main shows have been so god damn awful ever since Benoit died.

Recently I've taken to only watching wrestling live, or through gif's on twitter.

Best ways to enjoy it imo.

I was at a restaurant today and they had WWE on from this past monday, I think, and I saw that Braun Strowman screamed at Kurt Angle, he went inside the control trailer and yelled at everybody and kicked them out, then he flipped over the semi-truck, and I couldn't help but to think "wow, this is wrestling now. What garbage. It's the same thing week in and week out." Stories have become so predictable. It's all about yelling at management, have some type of number one contender match, attacking others in the ring/backstage, then the other guy sits up and laughs like Brock did when Kane chokeslammed him. It's almost as if Vince takes a poo, wipes his butt, stares into the soiled tissue and interprets what the next show should have in it.

I'd comment on the match, but I'd rather comment on one of the signs in the crowd:

Spoiler: show
The shed that AJ Styles built. :upsidedownlol:

Yeah I've seen Pentagon Jr, Sami Callahan and MASADA all do that move. I'd love it in fire pro for deathmatch guys.

Is the game that we get excited and then Daniel Bryan gets eliminated randomly halfway through the match so we just boo the rest?

We usually do a "pick em" sort of thing where people would pick an entry number and see who wins, but this year seems to be a dud since there hasn't been much interest in the current product.

True.

Plus with Vegas now having betting odds that the insiders are involved with so the entire PPV gets spoiled before it even airs - kinda defeats the fun of it.

Knowing Vince wants Roman vs Brock at mania kills the interest.

Yeah, more-or-less.

It practically guarantees that the winner will be from Smackdown.

I'll probably watch it anyways because I'm a loser that has nothing better to do on a Sunday night.

My friends and I put money in a pot and draw numbers (only like 5$, mind you) to see who wins. You get whoever comes out on that number.

Sometimes it gets amusingly one sided, though. I had Roman AND Trips (when Trips won the title) two years ago and another friend had Batista and Roman two years prior (when Batista won).

WWE has released Enzo Amore two days after suspending him indefinitely after a rape allegation was made against him.

I know...."WWE sucks"... "non-wrestling Enzo sucks" but I still thought it worth mentioning since it's kind of an unusual circumstance for the business.

He's fired now. Sounds like he hid the allocation from WWE originally when it occurred in October, and that might be the reason they just fired him all together.

Honestly, considering how hated he was backstage I imagine he was gonna end up fired one way or another anyway.

19 years ago today Kawada defeated Misawa for the triple crown. This match would standout as Kawada breaks his arm 6 minutes into the match and he would accidentally create the infamous Ganso Bomb which was actually a failed attempt to do a powerbomb with said broken arm.
